Yet maps cannot begin to convey the vastness of the distance they must cross: barren sweeps of desert, where the days are unbearably hot and the nights frosted with ice hostile grasslands where bands of nomadic horsemen resent the intrusion of strangers and the forbidding mountains rippling up between the continents, where dragons remain feral and unused to men. With the Allegiance still under repair and with the sea route promising a long and convoluted voyage around India and Africa, Laurence and Temeraire decide it will be quicker to fly overland. They are ordered to travel via Istanbul to collect three dragon eggs which the British government have bought at great expense from the Ottomans and, with these close to hatching, it is vital to reach the Bosphorus as soon as possible. However, a destructive fire in the ship’s galley before they have even left port, coupled with the arrival of a dogeared but urgent letter from their commander, forces Laurence to change his original plans. This, the third after Temeraireand Throne of Jade, reunites us with our heroes in China as they prepare to begin the long journey back home to England aboard the Allegiance. Opening a new Temeraire book is the literary equivalent of curling up with a warm blanket and a cup of tea. This series has become my comfort reading of choice at the moment, as it so perfectly combines very good writing with spirited adventure. It’s been a long week at work and so I decided it was time for another Temeraire novel.

Still, Nezhukumatathil cultivates optimism through the sparkle and shrieks of the animals she describes and the flora and fauna right outside our windows. Half-Filipino and half-Indian, Nezhukumatathil describes the implicit and explicit racism she has faced as well as the ways she’s felt unseen because of the color of her skin and family origin. In her essays, each mostly written around a particular species, Nezhukumatathil meditates on nature while also depicting her coming-of-age journey, experience with racism, family relationships, and new motherhood. The natural world Aimee Nezhukumatathil describes in her collection World of Wonders: In Praise of Fireflies, Whale Sharks, and Other Astonishments, out today, is awe-inducing and delightfully whimsical. The ending has a touch of deus ex machina, but readers will gladly follow Forster into a presumed sequel. Set in a magically isolated Empire with a strict caste system, a two-child limit, and telepathic cats, Forster’s well-crafted story and confident prose are rich, packed with small details that immerse readers in her sumptuously imagined world. With time running out, Nisha tries to find out what happened to the girls, uncovering her own lost past along the way. Just as her wish seems within reach, the deaths of several girls make Nisha a valuable pawn, now destined to be sold as a slave. As Matron’s assistant, Nisha isn’t part of any House, but she dreams of being Redeemed from the city by a handsome young man. There, orphaned or unwanted girls are raised in six specialized houses to be wives, courtesans, artists, entertainers, healers, or soldiers. Abandoned as a child, 16-year-old Nisha Arvi has grown up within the private walled estate known as the City of a Thousand Dolls. Forster makes a strong debut with a fresh South Asian–inspired fantasy/mystery crossover. Zoë Wanamaker returned to the role of Ariadne Oliver, marking her fifth out of six appearances on the show in total. It was broadcast on ITV on 9 June 2013, and later on the Acorn TV website on 11 August 2014, over a year later. The novel was adapted into a TV film with David Suchet as Poirot, as an episode in the final series of Agatha Christie's Poirot. Elephants Can Remember concentrates on memory and oral testimony. This was the last novel to feature either character, although it was succeeded by Curtain: Poirot's Last Case, which had been written in the early 1940s but was published last. It features her Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and the recurring character Ariadne Oliver. Basically, OK, there’s this area of the United States-possibly Florida, but it’s unclear-called “the forgotten coast,” and about 30 years ago it was mysteriously taken over by an environment called “Area X,” described by many who visit it as “a pristine wilderness.” Area X retains a few vestiges of the human society that existed there before this transformative event-some bits and bobs of houses, and more importantly, a pretty pivotal lighthouse-but mostly it’s a teeming, pollution-free natural habitat. There’s really no way to give the Southern Reach pitch without sounding high, so I won’t try. Set in both a terrifyingly dangerous primeval setting and the beloved world of Tarzan, The Eternal Savage movingly reveals whether eternal love is strong enough to triumph over undying adversity. But other men treacherously compete for the love of Victoria in modern Africa and for the heart of Nat-ul in the distant past. Awakening thousands of years later on Tarzan's estate in Africa, he gives his heart to Victoria Custer of Nebraska, a visitor to the estate, who is the reincarnation of Nu's Stone Age love, Nat-ul. Nu, a warrior from the Stone Age, is buried alive in an earthquake while stalking a saber-toothed tiger. Time travel, a millennium-spanning romance, and rousing action in modern African jungles and the untamed prehistoric wilderness ignite this classic adventure tale from the pen of Edgar Rice Burroughs. It was an adrenaline rush to write every word, from the moment Harres burst in to save Talia, to every moment of their journey back to safety as peril and passion rose to unmanageable levels. Not one taking place in Zohayd’s palaces among luxury and man-made grandeur, with the only threats being the insidious royal conspiracies and political intrigue, but one out there in the desert, where nature is the ultimate enchantment and enemy, and where constant danger to the hero’s and heroine’s lives and hearts is omnipresent. I can’t tell you how I much I loved writing Harres and Talia’s story. Now that he’d told her who he was, nothing could ever be the same. Now it would end, the spontaneity of the attraction that had exploded into life between them. Harres nodded, already acutely sorry that he’d told her. Then she finally rasped, “You’re an Aal Shalaan?” He stared down at her, all his being rioting, needing her back against him, her lips crushed beneath his, her heat enveloping his suddenly chilled body. “I Don’t Know Your Name… Let Alone What It Means…” |
